FRUK is an Ofsted registered Forest School founded in 2014 by Hayley Mitchell and Elizabeth Hassay, two local mothers who believe in the Forest School pedagogy of child led outdoor learning through play. We are of German and Danish descent, countries with a strong heritage in Forest School, and our childhoods were filled with outdoor experiences. We decided to launch a Forest School as there was not one in Hackney that we could send our sons to and so set about creating one.
We have had fantastic support from many people and organisations who have guided us and made FRUK possible. Hackney Learning Trust have been a wealth of information. Hackney Council, who have granted us permission to operate from within South Millfields Park and their wonderful team of Park Rangers, Cath Prisk from Outdoor People, The Tree Musketeers, a voluntary run organisation that are based at the Hackney Community Tree Nursery to name just a few.
We want children to be able to explore nature and have the space and freedom to learn and play outdoors all year round.
The children who are part of FRUK are looked after and taught important life skills in a unique ever changing environment. We follow the EYFS – Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum incorporating all the seven areas of learning which we deliver via the Forest School ethos.
FRUK is holistically minded and ensures all areas of our practice contributes to the health and wellbeing of our FRUK community. This includes serving organic and locally grown and made produce. Sourcing natural materials in our setting for our activities to ensure we do not harm the environment. Plus we collaborate with and source brands that share and adhere to values of Blue Sign.
